Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Activate the Yeast
In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the water and let it sit for 5–10 minutes, or until the mixture becomes foamy. This indicates that the yeast is active and ready to work.
Step 2: Add Salt, Oil, and Flour
Stir in the salt and vegetable oil (or melted butter) to the yeast mixture.
Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. Start with 6 cups of flour.
Once the dough begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl, you can determine if more flour is needed. The dough should be soft and slightly sticky but not overly wet.
Step 3: Knead the Dough
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
Knead by hand for about 8–10 minutes, or use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5–6 minutes. The dough should become smooth, elastic, and spring back when poked.
